I have great respect for the University Democrats accepting Trump’s presidency in the last issue’s article, as that is something many individuals are currently unwilling to do. With the hashtag “not my president” on Facebook and Twitter, and riots in the streets over Trumps’ presidency, it is a breath of fresh air to see the BU Dems accepting his presidency, regardless of how displeased they may be with the results.
What is unfortunate though is that Trump won the election fair and square, yet protests are occurring all over America, college students are having classes canceled and are running off to their safe spaces, and talk of how Hillary can still win is flooding social media. The sixth stage of grief is acceptance, and Americans who are denying that Trump will be our next President need to move on from stage five by January.
While the Dems do accept Trump’s presidency, they build a dismal picture of Trump’s America, hinting that women, LGBTQA, and religious rights will be rolled back. They even claim that we have made it through some “horrific time periods” and therefore we will prevail through Trump’s presidency as well.
I don’t think we will have to “prevail” or suffer through anything. I truly believe Donald Trump will be an excellent president, even if the only reason is to prove every protestor or crybaby who is fighting the election wrong.
Trump will not do what individuals are claiming he will. Trump has no interest in rolling back marriage equality- he has shown his support of LGBTQA rights by actions such as holding up a gay pride flag during his rallies (“Donald Trump holds high the flag for gay equality,” Washington Times). While he may be pro-life, it is unlikely that Roe vs. Wade will be overturned during his presidency, and on issues such as paid maternity leave he has showed his compassion for fighting for women (“Paid Family Leave Could Be a Reality in Trump’s America,” Time). And while Donald Trump will fight against radical Islamic terrorism, limiting the rights of everyday Muslims is not part of Donald Trump’s plan, which is clear to anyone who listens to his speeches and interviews rather than determines their opinions on Trump based on social media.
Trump has already taken many steps which show what type of president he will be. Trump and President Obama had an excellent meeting where they both showed cooperation skills and the ability to talk while putting differences aside. Trump stated he would not accept the presidential salary, as always showing he is not in this for himself (“Trump: No ‘big’ vacations, no salary as president,” USA Today). He has told any supports who are acting in a bigoted, sexist, or Islamophobic way to stop (“Trump to supporters harassing minorities: Stop it,” CNN). He is already fighting for the people, even while the people are fighting against him.
Though it may be hard for many to accept, Donald Trump will be our next president. Americans need to unite and stop trying to fight the system; whether they like it or not, Trump won fair and square. The rioting, the burning of flags, and the harassment of Trump supporters needs to stop. On the same token, any Trump supporter harassing minorities needs to cease these despicable behaviors as well. We need to come together, and give our president-elect a chance. Hoping for him to fail is hoping for American to fail.
God bless America, God Bless our next President Donald Trump. Let’s Make America Great Again.
